1. What does my kid need?
Not much, don’t worry too much about the quality of shoes at this age. Any running shoe will do, as long as they fit well. You don’t have to buy anything new. Last year the runners wore the BSS athletic shirt from the Spirit wear order and typically black shorts for the meets. We will discuss at our 1st practice if we want to order something else and evaluate the cost.
Kids should bring a water bottle to practice and meets.
Parents are encouraged to run with the kids and might benefit from a watch so they can time some of the runs at practice and on their own. All parents who want to run with the kids at practice need to be Virtus trained. Typically we need at least 3 parents to run with the group. I like to have a “fast” parent at the beginning of the group, one in the middle, and one at the end. This way an adult has all the runners in their sight at all times.
2. What if I can’t make a practice or a meet?
We will practice one night a week and ask that the kids run an additional day on their own. Hopefully the kids can make it to most practices to have fun and bond together. However, if your child can not make the practice night due to another sport’s practice but still wants to run in the meets, it is possible. The practice night has yet to be determined. Last year most practices were held at Pioneer Park, but that could change for this upcoming season.
With regard to meets, each one is entered separately. The coach needs to be notified in advance if your child cannot make a particular meet.
3. When will meets be?
Most will be on Saturdays either before or after the high school meets. A tentative schedule will be available by mid-August. There is potentially a meet every Saturday from late August through late October. We need a minimum of 5 girls and 5 boys for every meet to be scored as a team. You can check out the website http://ky.milesplit.com/teams/bs to see our events and times from last year’s schedule. Meet officials submit the results to this website.
4. How far will the kids have to run?
The elementary school races are usually between 1000 and 3000 meters, with the longer distance for the older kids. In practice we may run a mile or so along with some games or other drills to keep the kids moving.
5. What do we do if it rains?
If there is a light rain, you can plan on having practice. If it is storming I will try to email the group the day of practice (probably in the afternoon) to let you know the plans. It is rare that meets are cancelled. It will be up to the race director to decide and once I know the status of a meet cancellation, I will email the group.
